A Word From Our Veterinarian...
Dear Cattlemen:
I have been working with the Camp Cooley herd since 1991. In that time, we have taken aggressive and responsible measures to develop a comprehensive herd health program. Camp Cooley’s herd health program is designed to ensure thrifty and healthy animals for our program and yours. The herd health program includes a very extensive vaccination protocol. The entire herd is vaccinated annually for 8-Way Clostridial, BVD, IBR, PI3, BRSV, Vibrio, 5-Way Lepto. Haemophilus Somnus and Trichomoniasis. An autogenous bacterin consisting of E. Coli, Pasturella Haemolytica and Multocida is administered. Additionally, Rotavirus and Corona Virus vaccines are given. The cow herd is vaccinated approximately 60 days pre-calving to assist colostral immunity of these diseases. The cow herd is
dewormed at least twice a year. A quality and palatable mineral is available free choice through the year. The health of this herd is excellent. All vaccinations are performed according to Beef Quality Assurance
Guidelines.
Camp Cooley is certified Brucellosis free herd, number 6330. Annual testing is performed in the spring.
Camp Cooley has an on-going Bovine Leukosis and Johne’s disease control program that was initiated in 1994. This program consists of an annual serologic blood test for each member of the herd that is one year of age or older. In addition, fecal cultures have been used in the Johne’s control program.
Much time, labor and research are required to properly administer a herd health and disease control program of this magnitude. However, in working with Klaus Birkel and his staff, their commitment to this rigorous program has never faltered. Doing the right thing at Camp Cooley is status quo, and the health and disease control program is no exception. For your buying confidence, each animal greater than one year of age has tested negative for Johne's’ and Leukosis.
I have personally performed Breeding Soundness Exams on each bull being offered. They have all passed a BSE and are considered satisfactory potential breeders. A BSE form will be provided to the purchaser of each bull. Additionally, interstate health papers suitable for interstate shipment will be furnished on all animals. A negative TB test has been performed with 30 days of the sale cattle.
Should you have any questions on Camp Cooley herd health or disease control programs, feel free to call. I will be at the ranch during the sales and hope you can join us for what promises to be a special event.
Sincerely,
Steve Schultz, DVM
