Dean Spends Summer at Camp Cooley Ranch®
For Immediate Release
Franklin, TX - Tyler Dean, Forgan, Oklahoma spent his summer gaining valuable job skills at Camp Cooley Ranch®.
Dean performed a variety of tasks on the central Texas ranch, including riding herd on sale bulls, coordinating events on the ranch, such as field days, ranch tours and a junior leadership camp. In addition, he assisted with marketing details at their summer registered sale and with data research projects. He also was involved with customer relations and assisted on the ranch as help was needed.
Camp Cooley Ranch® is home to over 3,000 head of registered Charolais, Angus and Brangus cattle, a large commercial cattle and hay operation as well as exotic wildlife. They are currently listed by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association as the third largest seedstock producer in the nation and was the 2004 Beef Improvement Federation Seedstock Producer of the Year.
He also completed his term as president of the International Junior Brangus Breeders Association (IJBBA) in July and has been an active member of the IJBBA since he was 9-years-old.
“I attended a career fair where my interest in an internship was sparked. Then I was visiting with Cheramie Viator of Camp Cooley Ranch® and asked her if they offered an internship program and they did. I really wanted to do this as I knew opportunities like this do not come around twice. I gained knowledge and experience in all phases of the registered business and I also was in contact with people who are respected in the beef business. It was an awesome experience and I recommend internships in general to other students and specifically, the Camp Cooley internship program,” he described.
Dean feels the experience he gained will be a big plus in his future and position him more favorably for a career.
“I learned a lot about many things, but I learned a lot about marketing in particular. I got there in time to be involved with their inaugural Charolais sale, then I was involved on a daily basis with the 1,200 bulls that will sell in November of all three breeds. I learned various aspects that go into event planning and making an event successful. My last weekend there, the ranch hosted an Angus field day, a Charolais junior leadership camp and provided ranch tours as a prequel to the Texas A&M University Beef Short Course, which draws over 1,200 people annually. It was challenging,” he explained.
Dean, is the son of Terry and Jeri Dean and is a senior at Oklahoma State University, majoring in agribusiness with an emphasis in farm and ranch management, plus a minor in animal science.
