Congratulations To Our Cooperator, Mays Ranching Company

Mays Ranching Company, of Brady Texas was recognized as the American International Charolais Association (AICA) 2005 Commercial Producer of the Year at the annual Board of Directors Meeting March 30, 2005 in Kansas City Missouri.

Recipients of this award are selected by AICA to recognize outstanding commercial cattle operations who utilize Charolais genetics in their cattle enterprises. Mays Ranching Co. was selected from applicants from all over the United States for this honor and they will also represent the Charolais breed in the upcoming BIF meetings where they will eligible for the BIF Commercial Producer of the year award.

Mays Ranching Company owned by the Mays family has been running cattle in the Brady, Texas area for generations. Under the leadership of Dr. Myron Mays DVM and with his son Grant now managing the operation, they have built an outstanding herd of commercial cows and have been in the forefront of the industry in implementing improved management techniques and sourcing superior genetics. Before his retirement from his veterinary practice, Myron was an outspoken advocate for value added cattle management practices such as the now famous VAC-45 feeder calf health and management program.

The Mays herd consists of primarily Brangus and Brangus cross cows at one location with another ranch consisting of Angus, Brangus and crosses of both. For the past several years, Charolais bulls have been used in a terminal crossbreeding program to increase production of the cow herd on both ranches and also maximize marketing opportunities for their feeder calves.

For many years now, Mays Ranching Co. has bought the highest performing Charolais bulls from our bull sale. Their emphasis has been on growth and carcass traits and due to the rough terrain on their ranches, structural soundness is a high priority.

Due to the scale of their operation, Mays Ranching Co. markets their feeder calves in load lots directly to buyers. Every year, some of the largest and best known cattle feeders in the country compete for the high quality calves produced by Mays Ranching Co. Their attention to detail in genetic and management decisions are impressive.

In 2001 Camp Cooley Ranch®, through the P.R.E.P. program was able to procure the calf crop where the cattle performed very well, both live and on the rail. Camp Cooley Ranch® feels a really close connection to the Mays program since all of the Brangus genetics represented in the cow herd stem either from bulls purchased from Brinks Brangus (or heavily influenced by Brinks genetics) or commercial Brangus females purchased from Brinks or Camp Cooley Brangus customers, plus they’ve used our Charolais bulls.

We all know the benefits of terminal crossbreeding, and it is especially gratifying to see such a program in place where terminal sires are sourced from the same program that influenced the maternal genetics of the cow herd.
